An interview with Chloe Becquet, Director of IT at BounceX.
What do you ACTUALLY do?
Mainly run around to meetings, checking out new tech and make people feel empowered and supported with all their IT needs! Between all that, manage a small team of IT ninjas and trying to automate everything.
What types of devices do you support?
We are prominently a MacOS shop, with a couple Windows (for those excel users!!) and the usual office stuff like networking equipment, printers & AV equipment.
What’s your favorite piece of tech?
Wireless headphones, preferably noise canceling so I can focus whenever a critical task is at hand.
What tools or apps are most important to your job?
Jamf, Slack, GSuite and a good ticketing system. Right now, we use Zendesk. It’s clean and simple and provides great metrics.
Do you prefer hands-on, or troubleshooting from afar?
I actually like both! Hands-on to get the exercise and afar gets my customer service/phone skills a good work out too.
Favorite thing about your IT environment?
Everything! Having everything in the cloud! Allows for the company to grow easily, less hardware and no longer chained to the desk in the office! Work from home/cafe anyone?
My amazing team! They are awesome, love what they do and always looking to outdo themselves
Thing you’d most like to change about it?
Grow my team to allow my ninjas to focus on projects and give them time/room to learn new things/tech and grow! There is so much potential in doing great things here, and having a good and strong team really helps
What’s on your desk?
Always try to stay clear of clutter…. but that’s a losing battle.
How did you start your career in IT?
Used to watch my dad play with his computers as a hobby when I was a tiny little 8yrs old.. upgraded to fixing my friends and friends’ parents’ tech when I was 13, and finally got my first paying gig in IT support in a small MSP in Australia.
What are the biggest misconceptions of your role, internally or externally?
Two things! Assuming IT people know how to fix EVERYTHING electronic (*cough*coffeemachine*cough*) AND being the stereotypical non-approachable IT nerd. We love helping people and still know how to have non-nerdy fun (the nerdy kind is still awesome and I won’t give that up!)
What was your proudest professional moment?
Watching any team members grow and find their passion as well as getting my users to get a new perspective to what IT does and fall in love with their IT support team!
What are the biggest challenges in your work?
BounceX is growing. FAST! Having brought IT in recently, we have to implement policies, processes, fix/replace any outdated and broken systems as well as support a growing company.
Most cringeworthy request?
Having to remember a C level’s various passwords because they didn’t want to be bothered with the responsibility of taking their security seriously.
Do you stay hydrated at work?
CLI or GUI?
A bit of that and a bit of this! CLI gets me in the nit & gritty when needed, but ticking a box in a GUI is also nice to have!
DIY or turnkey?
Depends on my workload and time constraints – these days, turnkey is getting better and cheaper, so I am leaning towards that.
