Ways to work from home: 9 tips from an expert collaborator

Remote work

atSpoke HQ is in San Francisco, but we have Spokespeople across the world. The future of work is evolving, and we can’t ignore that current events are accelerating its change. atSpoke believes our workplace culture should reflect our product philosophy—that every employee has what they need to do their best work. This isn’t limited to tools, so in the upcoming weeks, we’ll be sharing pro-tips from our internal experts on remote working, how best to support a distributed team, and our thoughts on the future of work.

We at atSpoke who are new to full-time remote work found that we were struggling to succeed at home. Isabelle Bilmes, our Senior Designer jumped in as our remote expert with some awesome tips we had to share. Isabelle currently connects with HQ from Los Angeles, but has worked with atSpoke in New York, Hawaii, Spain, and Israel.

👋 Slack is your best friend

The social life you had at the office turns into being on Slack.

📹 Zoom is your second best friend

Sometimes things get lost over Slack, don’t be shy to ask to jump on a Zoom call!

✅ If you see something in Slack acknowledge it

Add an emoji reaction at the least. Sometimes it feels like no one hears you and really helps to feel like you are heard.

🗣 Over-communicate

You have to be annoying about it sometimes, but don’t be shy about over-communicating.
Reach out to people way more than you think you should. It’s OK to ping people to see how they are doing!

👩🏻‍💻 Be comfortable with being alone

Turning on music helps a lot if you feel like you need some kind of noise like you did in the office. Music helps me to concentrate. I find music with words distracting when I need to do deep concentration work.

🌷 Create a really nice workspace that you want to work from

Having a really comfy chair helps A LOT. This is the one I have and love it.

⛹️‍♂️ Make sure you leave your house after work

Go see people, go on a walk or go workout–it helps when you’re feeling cooped up.

🙅🏻‍♀️ Do not work from your bed

Been there, done that…separate your comfy bed from your work. Your mind needs to know the difference between where it goes to rest and where it goes to work.

🤹🏻‍♀️ You are your own boss

Get💩done at your own pace, but make sure you are clear on your deadlines and deliverables.
